Sabrina Laya Gacad
Sabrina Laya Gacad is the founder and director of Lunas Collective, a feminist, volunteer-powered helpline and care space for people who experience gender-based violence, or discomfort and distress related to their sexuality and sexual and reproductive health.
Lunas Collective also offers sexuality education that encourages people to seek help when necessary, and to build healthy relationships with themselves and those they love.
In her research and work with Lunas Collective, Sabrina is exploring the many ways that health and social welfare services can be improved to offer empathy and care as the first response to the personal experience of systemic inequality, and then help people take steps towards their idea of safe, pleasurable, and meaningful lives.
Sabrina also is an assistant professor and the current chair of the Department of Women and Development Studies of the College of Social Work and Community Development at the University of the Philippines. Earlier in her career, she was a staffer in the House of Representatives during the years leading to the passage of the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012.
That experience, as well as her research on teen pregnancy, inspired her to focus on issues of gender, sexuality, and development.
