MAYFONG MAYXAY
Professor Mayfong Mayxay is the Rector and Professor of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease at the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Ministry of Health, Lao PDR. He also holds visiting professorships at theUniversity of Oxford and the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, National University of Singapore. In addition to his academic roles, he serves as a Member of Parliament in the Lao National Assembly (9th legislation).
Prof. Mayxay has played a transformative role in advancing health research and education in Laos. He established the Lao-Oxford-Mahosot Hospital-Wellcome TrustResearch Unit (LOMWRU), the country’s first Ethical Committee and Medical Journal. He co-founded the Lao One Health University Network (LAOHUN) and the Lao Infectious Disease Society (LIDS), serving as Chairman and President, respectively. He also co-founded the Unit for Health Evidence and Policy (UHEP) at UHS.
Internationally, he holds key positions with AAAH, SEAMEO TROPMED, MOHIP, and MORU. With over 25 years of experience, Prof. Mayxay has published over 250 research papers on infectious diseases, health policy, and more. His work has earned him several accolades, including the Hitachi Global Foundation Asia Innovation Award (2020).
