Professor Dato’ Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman is the President and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Monash University Malaysia, where she leads the university’s academic and research mission as the first foreign university established in the country. An internationally recognised expert in HIV and infectious diseases, her work has focused on pragmatic, evidence-based approaches to HIV prevention among key populations, including people who use drugs and incarcerated communities, highlighting the links between inequality and disease vulnerability. In 2021, she was appointed an inaugural member and now Vice Chair of the WHO Science Council, advising

on scientific priorities with global health impact. She also serves as Chair of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation, the ROSE Foundation, and is Commissioner for the Global Commission on Drug Policy and the Global Commission on Inequality, AIDS and Pandemics. A former President of the International AIDS Society—the first woman of Asian descent to hold the role—she also founded Malaysia’s Centre of Excellence for Research in AIDS (CERiA). She previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Malaya and has published over 300 scientific papers.
